Hoffmann, Georg Melchior (1685–1715) [or Hoffmann, Johann Georg (1700–1780)]

Concerto a 7 ex Dis, für Horn, 2 Oboen, 2 Violinen, Viola und Bass

Robert Ostermeyer, 1999, piano reduction and orchestra score

The editor indicates that the composer could be one of the two Hoffmanns listed above. This work is scored for two oboes, strings, and horn solo. In four movements. The first movement is a brief Adagio with strings only. The second movement, Allegro ma non presto, is full of technical passages of sextuplet and sixteenth-note figures typical of baroque horn writing. The horn is tacet in the third-movement Adagio, which features two oboes and strings. The fourth movement is a menuet and trio, with the horn tacet in the trio. Based on a set of parts in the Sächsische Landesbibliothek in Dresden, this piece also appears without a composer’s name as no. 2 in the Lund manuscript (Katalog Wenster Literature I/1–17b in the Universitets-biblioteket in Lund, Sweden).

Concerto E-Dur für Horn und Orchester

Robert Ostermeyer, 2004, piano reduction and orchestra score

In three movements: Allegro—Romance: Poco adagio—Rondo. This work features wide leaps and characteristic cor-basse arpeggiated figures, as well as elegant lyrical lines typical of classical writing for the horn.

Range: F♯–g♯2 (G–a2 with for horn in E)

Duration: 15:00

Concerto D-Dur für Horn und Orchester

Robert Ostermeyer, 2010, piano reduction and orchestra score

In three movements: Allegro—Andante—Rondo. The slow middle movement is relatively short. This work features writing in both cor-alto and cor-basse styles. There are large leaps—many are at the speed of half notes—and a passage in the first movement that ventures into the pedal range of the horn. Combine this with lyrical phrases in the middle and higher tessitura, and you have a piece that is perfect for the well-rounded horn virtuoso. Several challenging entrances on high b2 in the second movement.

Range: E–c♯3 ossia E–b2 (G–e3 ossia G–d3 for horn in D)

Duration: 9:30
